Dana Michelle Burnett – Author of Spiritus Series

Today we are talking with Dana Michelle Burnett about her new book Spiritus which is Book #1 in her series about a young woman (Becca) and a love triangle with the spirit of her former love (Alastor) and a young man who she had met at her new school (Jonah).

Dana, tells us a little more about Book #1 Spiritus.

Spiritus is the first book in the series by the same name. It examines the relationship between Becca and Alastor, the ghost that haunts her new home. He believes her to be the reincarnation of his former wife. The question then becomes is he back because of love or is he seeking revenge?

I have to know, when will Book #2 be released and how many books to you have planned for this series?

I’m almost finished outlining Book #2, which will be titled Haunted, and hope to have it available late winter/early 2012. At the moment, I’m planning three books total, but I also originally planned for Spiritus to be a standalone novel, so there could end up being more than three.

Can you give us a little insight into Book #2?

Book #2 so far has taken a darker turn. Becca has to come to terms with her relationship between Alastor and Jonah as well as her past and current lives. She has much more control in the second book, maturing into her own person, and becomes a force to be reckoned with in her own right.

Spiritus takes place in the real town of Corydon, Indiana. Why did you choose Corydon?

Corydon is not that far from where I live and I often drive past the antiquated mansions on Capitol Avenue, so I suppose it was only natural when I needed a town with old houses dating back to before the Civil War that Corydon came to mind. In book #2, the history of the town really comes into play with the Battle of Corydon and Morgan’s Raid on the town.

Spiritus is not your only book. Can you tell us a little about your other stories?

I began writing with short stories for literary magazines, my most successful being stories based on my own Cherokee heritage. My novel Ghost Country is a collection of those stories and a few that were never submitted. My favorite of those is John Lennon and the Chicken Holocaust. My other novel, Two Out of Three, while not as popular, is actually my first commercial fiction work. Two Out of Three is about two people that are absolutely toxic together, but have such a strong attraction to each other that you still pull for them. I think it was a little too dark and twisted for the romance market, but I’m still very proud of it.

What do you like to do when you aren’t writing?

My daughter is my biggest fan, so anytime that I’m not writing I return the favor by being a dance mom and supporting her when she competes. I also love to read and I am a sucker for a celebrity scandal. Yes, I’m that woman in the checkout lane reading all the tabloids. I would have to say though; I’m one of those writers who are always writing. Just because I’m not writing it down, doesn’t mean that somewhere in my brain I’m not working through a scene in one of my books.

Thank you for joining us today. Check out my review of Spiritus
