So happy for this short story. I miss Brishen and Ildiko.
This takes place just after the events of The Ippos King. The royal family was killed by the galla with the exception of baby Tarawin, who will someday be the Queen. Currently Brishen is standing in as Regent until she comes of age.
Brishen is currently making plans to surround their former capital with walls and water after Serovek and Anhuset reported seeing a galla still wandering the capital. And while he is hosting some of the surviving minor lords, some of which are not friendly to Brishen and his human wife, someone kidnaps the two people who mean the world to Brishen — Ildiko and Tarawin.
Since this is only 144 pages, I can’t go into too much without giving everything away, but know that someone understands the issues brought up Eidolon (Book 2) which focused on the fact that Brishen was believed to be the only surviving member of the royal family and who was married to a human, a woman who could not produce Kai heirs to the throne. Someone has a plan and needs Ildiko out of the way. Stakes are high as the kidnappers have a head start on Brishen and it won’t take long to dispatch a weak, unarmed human woman in a nightgown.
I raced through it as I wasn’t going to sleep until I found out what happened and then I picked up my copy of Radiance once again to spend more time with Brishen and Ildiko.
