It has been three years since the last Demon Hunter book. While I enjoyed reading it, it seemed to meander from beginning of the story until the end dropping some characters and walking away from some plot points. With such a long delay since the last book, it was hard to pick up where we left off with the characters. I had a vague recollection of some things but not where we left off with everyone.
This is a very enjoyable series. Since we have already been introduced to all of the important characters by this point, we could jump right into the action.

No matter what problems I have with J.R. Ward’s world building, anything featuring Rhage and Mary gets 5 stars in my book. As if Rhage couldn’t be any hotter or sweeter, The Beast will melt your heart. Anyone not already on Team Rhage will be switching over after reading the Beast. This book is only 170 pages and it is attempting to do a lot in those 170 pages. The author is setting up the world building. She is introducing all the characters. She is giving us a villain and a mystery to be solved. She is also giving us a romance for our main characters. It is a lot to accomplish in just a few pages. While in some respects if fails, in the most important aspect, she succeeded. Simply put, I want to read more.
I didn’t finish this book. It is part of the series so I tried really hard to finish. I even picked it up again after putting is aside and got 70% done but I just couldn’t make myself finish it.

I love the idea that Cecy Robson has switched from Celia to Taran in her narrative of the series. I am frustrated that she has taken a step back in time since we left Taran injured and floundering with her powers and self-esteem. Now it might take books and books before we start to unravel how she deals with her injury and all that comes with it.
In this latest novel, I was not enamored with the romance between Trixie and Dakota, but I did enjoy the introduction the gargoyles and the treasure hunt to find their missing gold. I also liked the realization that we are too trusting and prone to believe what we are told by those we hold dear.
